Skills to Become A Data Scientist During Covid-19 Pandemic
Last week I was having a discussion with my friend and I came to know that he desires to grow his career in Data Science, hence switch his job. Due to the current situation of Covid-19, the first thought which came to my mind was “Not now !” as many people’s job is at risk. So I advised him to continue his current job for the time being.
Later I thought why not to do the analysis to see what is the current market trend in the data science field and help my friend to find the best-fit job easily.
To do the analysis I scrape some jobs post from GLASSDOOR with keywords Data Scientist, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning. Although I searched with those three keywords yet my results include web developer, android developer, software engineer, and many more. After simplifying into a few categories I got this-
- After Data Scientist, Data analysts have more demand than machine learning and AI engineer.
- As usual, Silicon Valley of India has the most job opening follows by Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Gurgaon, New Delhi, and Ahmedabad.
- Although the IT sector has most openings still if you have domain expertise you can go for Business, Finance, Biotech, and other sectors as well.
- It is obvious that small size companies don’t often post their vacancies in these sites, still, in our sample, we can see some good results. Big companies have most requirements after that micro-companies or startups also want data scientists.
- If you have experience around 2–5 years then there are plenty of opportunities, we can see some vacancies in the lead and senior post but comparatively fewer opportunities for principal, junior, and intern.
Skills
- Now coming to skills Python is the most preferred programming language then comes SQL, Java, Scala, C++, R-studio, and Julia.
- Among cloud platforms, AWS is popular then GCP and Azure.
- Interestingly MongoDB and MySQL have the same demand.
- Big data skills are a must nowadays. Many job post requires these skills.
- Among data visualization software Tableau is most popular.
- One interesting fact I notice is that currently, the requirement is more in the companies whose headquarter is in India.
So we can search job accordingly based on skills that are required the most and apply to those locations & sectors where demand is more to increase the chances of getting the offer. I will suggest you mention some keywords that are most common overall the job descriptions so as to pass the resume through ATS. You can take reference from the word cloud present in the first picture of this article.
